John Hartley Smith Provincial Grand Master

I was born in Preston in 1955 and have lived in the area all my life. I am married to Jane and have two children and four grandchildren. I am a semi-retired Chartered Accountant and have several other business interests.
Outside of Freemasonry, my hobbies are shooting and fishing but most particularly, Jane and I enjoy overseas travel. We took to cruising some ten years ago and have seen much of the world since then.
Masonically, I was initiated in Wyreside Lodge No. 2605 in 1980. I became a joining member of Royal Preston Lodge No 333 and was Master of that Lodge in 1992 and 2001. I was Master of Wyreside in 2014. I was a joining member of Queens Jubilee Lodge No 2193 in Colne and was Master of that Lodge in 2017. I am now a member of The Lodge of Good Report No. 7370 in Manchester. I was a Trustee of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution Care Company and was CEO and Chairman of Trustees of the West Lancashire Freemasons’ Charity. I hold the rank of PAGDC in the Craft.
I was exalted in Scorton Chapter 5791 in 1983 and became a joining member of Vale Chapter 5256 and was First Principal of that Chapter in 1996. I am currently First Principal of Alexandra Chapter 993 in Manchester. I have held the rank of PPrGSN in West Lancashire since 2009.
I joined the Knights Templar degree in 1984 and currently hold the rank of PGtReg.
I became a member of the Rose Croix in 1986 and currently am a member of the 32nd degree. I was a founder of three Rose Croix Chapters but my current membership is that of Rose of Lahore Chapter in Manchester alone.
I joined the Allied Masonic Degrees in 1988 and currently hold the rank of PGReg. I have been a founder of two Councils and am currently a member of Meridian Council in West Lancashire and Lancastria Council meeting in Manchester.
My Mark career is much more intricate. I was advanced in Scorton Mark Lodge 1103 in 1984 and subsequently became a member of Preston Mark Lodge. Whilst Provincial Second Constable in the KT, I met VWBro. Mervyn Wilson who was Provincial First Constable. He prevailed upon me to join an East Lancashire Mark Lodge, Derby No 817 which we both did in 2002. That was my introduction to Freemasonry in East Lancashire. I became Master of Derby Mark Lodge in 2003 and in 2007 I was appointed Provincial Grand Senior Warden. I then served two years as an Assistant DC and four years as Deputy DC. I was appointed an APGM in 2014 and Deputy PGM in 2015. I am a member of seven Mark Lodges in East Lancashire and a member of the Grand Stewards Lodge.

I joined the Royal Ark Mariner Degree in Preston RAM Lodge in 1988 and was Commander of that Lodge in 1995. I joined Hargreaves Mark Lodge (now No. 695 and based in Padiham) in 2006 and was Commander of that Lodge in 2009. I am a member of four Royal Ark Mariner Lodges in East Lancashire.

I have been a member of the Red Cross of Constantine, the Order of the Secret Monitor and the Knights Beneficent of the Holy City but time constraints over the years have compelled me to stand down from these interesting Orders.
