On 31 March 2016 two teams took to the field at Rochdale Masonic Hall in the clash of the giants. 1965 Rugby took on the might of the Provincial Team both sides led by Captains determined to have a great and convivial evening. Around 60 Brethren were present. For the Rugby Lodge, Worshipful Master VWBro Stephen Holt sporting a Rochdale Rugby Union tie and the Provincial Team led by RWBro Alexander Sillars McLaren, the Provincial Grand Master.

1965 kicked off early but the Provincial Team with Deputy PGM John Hartley Smith on the wing and The APGMs VWBro Jeff Huddart and WBro Tony Davies in the scrum hit back, wisely passing to Bro.Lee Marsh who gave an eloquent history of the Mark Benevolent Fund, ensuring every Brother understood the rich history of this fund. All agreed the benefits received from the fund within East Lancashire go some way in supporting Brethren in need. For example, the fund was able to provide emergency funds to those Brethren and their families affected by the recent floods. All Brethren were asked to support the East Lancashire Festival and the festival fund presently stands at over £90,000 which the PGM said was a great effort at this early stage. The PGM wanted to ensure all Lodges contribute but also have fun, which includes family and friends enjoying social events connected to the Festival. The PGM thanked The Worshipful Master for allowing him to occupy the chair during the meeting.

In the second half Rugby Football Lodge hit back and made everyone sing for their supper. Sandra the Waitress had come into work even though it was her 40^th birthday. Referee Simon Archer led the chorus of Happy Birthday.

The Worshipful Master received his first yellow card for an empty wine glass. The game proceeded at a pace with a fine meal and banter all around the room.The Lodge raffle raised a substantial amount resulting in two “tries” sorry ties being awarded as part of the raffle prizes. The Worshipful Master received a second yellow for what many considered a minor infringement. Video replay showed he should have been sin binned. The Referee saw differently and showed Red to the amusement of the gathered Brethren. The evening ended with both teams singing “Swing Low Sweet Chariot”.
